We started our first Maori session with Whaea Trish with a karakia.
Each week a different student in Room 24 or 25 will lead us in this.
Today we started by learning a simple action chant.

| .... next action |
| Performing our simple action chant |
We learnt how to pronounce the vowels correctly.
A - as in But
E - as in Egg
I - as in Igloo
O - as in Order
U - Pudding
Click on the link and you can practise too.
We also learnt the consonant sounds.
H, K, M, N, P, R, T, W, NG, WH
NG is the same sound as in the word SING.
WH is the same sound as F.
To get our attention and refocus us, Whaea Trish calls out:
AEIOU!
You can practise singing our Maori vowel song at home.
We were numbered into groups:
Either tahi, rua, toru, wha or rima.
Whaea Trish gave each group a word that they had to decipher (using the vowel and consonant sounds we had just learnt) and try and say these correctly. We had to work together to do this.
Tahi: Arewhana
Rua: Akara
Toru: Tangihana
Wha: Whakama
Rima: Tongariro
Ono: Whakarewa
To round up our first session we play Maori "Simon Says"
Our winner of this game was: Maggie!
Thanks Whaea Trish for an awesome first Maori lesson!
